During the Korean War from 1950 to 1953, women were active participants in the war effort, filling noncombat support roles from nurses and caregivers to supply clerks, and they also served as communication technicians, intelligence analysts, surgeons, and dentists. During the Vietnam War from 1955 to 1975, known as the longest US combat participation, thousands of women took part mostly in support services, most of them as volunteers, serving as air traffic controllers, intelligence officers, weather monitors, clerks, medical support team members, communication specialists, and many other roles, with 90% serving as nurses; over 11,000 women were stationed in Vietnam during the conflict.
