In 1838, Native Americans were forced from their lands in this area to reservations in Kansas in a removal known as Mbomyéw, the Trail of Death. On September 5, 1838, they marched down Rochester's Main Street as part of a 660 mile journey recorded as the equivalent of 1,320,000 steps.
