Admiral William Standley State Recreation Area is a small California state park on the Eel River in Mendocino County, west of Laytonville. Its forty-five acres protect redwoods along the river and support fishing, hiking, and picnicking, with salmon and steelhead fishing especially associated with the site. The park is named for Admiral William Standley, a U.S. naval officer whose career included command of the battleship California from 1926 to 1927, leadership of the United States battle fleet at San Pedro, service as Chief of Naval Operations beginning in 1933, and later duty as United States ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1942 to 1943.
