This cemetery opened in 1924 as a private burial ground, but the Vero Cemetery Association was disbanded during the Depression years. There were few burials, and most were relocated to a city-owned cemetery in Vero Beach. Some of the large headstones and grave markers were left behind, and the scrub vegetation of the Atlantic Coastal Ridge reclaimed the site. In 1994, Indian River County allowed the Indian River County Historical Society and the Progressive Civic League of Gifford to move the historic 1908 Macedonia Black Church to this site as a future Black History Museum and meeting place. In 2000-2002, a new Gifford Health Clinic was established on a portion of the original cemetery land. Today, Martin Luther King Memorial Park is an active part of the growing Gifford community.
