Joseph Hewes, born April 28, 1730, and died November 10, 1779, gave his labor and means to the cause of freedom. A vestryman of St. Paul’s Parish in Edenton, he was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a delegate from North Carolina to the Continental Congress, secretary of the Naval Committee, and a friend and patron of John Paul Jones.
