Under Brig. Gen. William P. Carlin, this brigade of Johnson's Division in Palmer's Corps, except for the 10th Wisconsin, marched from Chattanooga on the afternoon of Nov. 24, 1863, and reenforced Hooker in the Battle of Lookout Mountain. After leaving Hooker's column as it descended the mountain on Nov. 25, the brigade joined its division as the right of Gen. Thomas' assaulting lines and, under orders from Gen. Johnson, prepared to attack the enemy on Missionary Ridge. Advancing in two lines with the general advance, it captured the rifle-pits near the foot of the ridge and charged toward the summit. Although the brigade's right was at first repulsed, the capture of a rifle-pit halfway up by the 42nd Indiana, the 104th Illinois, and the 88th Indiana on the brigade's left enabled the whole line to advance to the summit. The 2nd Ohio then moved 300 yards to the right and captured a considerable part of the 36th Alabama with its colors.
