Summit Bechtel Reserve is a large Scouting reservation in southern West Virginia near Beckley and the New River Gorge, covering more than 14,000 acres across Fayette and Raleigh counties. Chosen in 2009 after a nationwide search, it became a permanent home for the National Scout Jamboree and one of Scouting America’s four high-adventure bases. Built on former coal-mining land and supported by major philanthropy, the site was designed for massive gatherings, with six subcamps, a large arena, a central lake, a long pedestrian suspension bridge, and extensive adventure facilities. It hosted national jamborees in 2013 and 2017 and the World Scout Jamboree in 2019.
