On the Chesapeake Bay, hunters used well crafted decoys made to resemble canvasback ducks to lure waterfowl within range, and over more than 100 years this practical hunting tradition developed into a distinctive heritage of decoy making. Working decoys were created as tools rather than as art, with skills passed from master to apprentice and each carver developing a unique style. In Havre de Grace, Maryland, known as the Decoy Capital of the World, the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum opened in 1986 and has preserved the legacy of waterfowling and decoy making in the Chesapeake Bay through exhibits, education, and conservation.
