Shoofly Village Ruin, in the Tonto National Forest near Payson, Arizona, preserves a major prehistoric village and the largest of four known primary villages in the surrounding landscape. Built around 1000 CE and occupied until about 1300 CE, it developed in multiple phases rather than as a single construction episode, with a later core of masonry rooms and surrounding cobble-jacal compounds. Archaeological work by Arizona State University and the Tonto National Forest beginning in 1984 used the site to study regional settlement patterns and Shoofly’s ties to smaller nearby communities. The site is important for understanding prehistoric community formation in central Arizona.
