Atwood’s first schoolhouse was a two-story wood-framed building near what is now the west corner of Main Street and Hickory Avenue, and its first graduating class in 1887 had two students. After fire destroyed that building in 1913, classes met in a temporary “sheep shed” until a new school building was completed in 1914 on what is now Illinois Street; the school colors were black and orange. Plans for a separate high school building began in 1915, and a structure was built on Magnolia Avenue, but fire destroyed it in 1917 and it was rebuilt. A gymnasium was added in 1938, an agriculture shop in 1955, and the entire high school was remodeled in 1964. In 1948, voters created a community school district including Atwood, Garrett, Hammond, and Pierson, with grade schools in each town and all high school students attending in Atwood; the school colors were then black and gold. Classes were later reorganized so kindergarten through sixth grade were held in Atwood, junior high in Hammond, and high school in Atwood, but Hammond’s school officially closed in 1981 and all grade levels moved to Atwood. The school building on Illinois Street was demolished in 2002 after becoming one of Atwood’s oldest structures. In 2013, voters approved the Arthur school district’s annexation of Atwood School District #39, and the last graduating class in 2014 had 32 seniors; the high school building was demolished that same year. Atwood-Hammond was unofficially the first high school in the United States to use Rajahs as the name of its athletic teams. The name arose in the 1920s from longtime coach Clarence E. Rogers, known as “Rog,” whose teams were seen as “Rog’s boys.” Sports reporter Eddie Jacquin likened Rog to a prince or Rajah, meaning an Indian prince or chief, and the name remained. Although a prince-type image had been used earlier, students in 1969 created and adopted a stylized version of a similar Japanese image as the Rajah mascot.
