Legion Park overlooks Port Gardner Bay to Mukilteo, with views of Smith Island, Priest Point, Camano, Jetty and Gedney (Hat) Islands, and on clear days the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges. To the north, the Snohomish River flows into the bay, which was formed by melting glacial ice ten thousand years ago. The Snohomish Tribe once spent winters in a village on the northern peninsula below Alverson Bridge. Legion Park developed significantly during the 1930s after the American Legion donated the land in 1932, and during the Great Depression federal funds supported WPA workers who cleared the acreage and built the park. The 129 acre Legion Memorial Golf Course was added in 1935, and a small arboretum of native plants was developed in 1961.
