This unique Victorian Texas public building is the third courthouse on this site, which lay in an 1824 land grant from Mexico and was donated in 1850 by Henry Fanthorp, the county’s first permanent settler. Built in 1891 of hand-molded brick with native stone trim, it contains the same vault used in the previous buildings, which has twice withstood fires. In the 1930s, a member of Clyde Barrow’s gang was tried here and vowed he would see the court in infernal regions.
