Larkins Peak is a 6,661-foot summit in northern Idaho’s Clearwater Mountains, in a remote part of the Mallard-Larkins Pioneer Area about 45 miles northeast of Orofino. Rising sharply above the headwaters of Larkins Creek, it gains 1,140 feet over the creek’s upper basin in just 0.4 miles, and runoff from its slopes feeds tributaries of the North Fork Clearwater River. The peak lies in an alpine subarctic climate marked by long, cold, snowy winters and cool to warm summers, with severe winter temperatures and wind chill. Larkins Peak, Larkins Creek, and nearby Larkins Lake were probably named for pioneering homesteader and trapper John Larkins.
