The Packards became closely identified with Lakewood through decades of civic generosity and community involvement. They first came in the late 1880's as summer visitors, and after building their mansion in 1912, they became full time and enthusiastic residents. Mr. Packard deeded the land for the Village Hall, provided partial funding for its construction, and at its 1915 dedication gave the fire company a Ford Model T chemical truck, its first motorized vehicle. A Packard gift also made possible the purchase of the carillon bells at the Lakewood Methodist Church. After James Ward Packard's death in 1928, Elizabeth Gilmer Packard remained active in civic affairs, serving two terms on the Lakewood School Board, creating and funding scholarships for high school students, and privately helping needy individuals continue their education. Shortly before her death in 1960, she gave money to the Southwestern Central School Board toward a new athletic field. Remembered as generous benefactors as well as good friends and neighbors, the Packards left a lasting legacy in Lakewood.
