The old Waugh Campground, east of the highway, was given to the Methodist church as a camp-meeting site by the Isaac S. Addison family. Mrs. Addison named the camp in honor of Bishop Beverly Waugh, who presided at the first Methodist Conference in Texas and who, like the Addisons, was from Baltimore, Md. The site was used for the church's quarterly conferences and for revivals. The Rev. B.H. Carroll, later a great Baptist leader, was converted here. The campground was also open for secular gatherings, including a famous debate on July 16, 1857, between U.S. Senator Sam Houston and Judge A.S. Broaddus, a Burleson County leader.
