At the end of this path, a cross-shaped mass grave holds the remains of 95 unknown Confederate soldiers who fought in the Battle of Lewisburg on 23 May 1862. The path follows the original trace of the James River-Kanawha Turnpike, which carried commerce through Lewisburg enroute to eastern markets.
