Hanovertown was once a thriving village that in 1761 missed becoming the capital of Virginia by a small vote. On May 27, 1864, the Federal army under Lieutenant General Grant crossed the Pamunkey here in its movement from the Wilderness to the James. Sheridan and Dahlgren also crossed here in their raids.
