Crews was settled in the 1880s and named for C.R. Crews, a Ballinger businessman. Mrs. Betty Sims was the earliest voluntary teacher and mail carrier. A school was built in 1890, with the Rev. Mr. Lockhart as first teacher. The post office was established in 1892 in the Wise & Broughten store, with J.D. Wise as first postmaster. The Methodist Church was organized in 1890 and the Baptist Church in 1894. Later, 11 businesses were in operation, and by 1930 the school had 7 teachers. The doctors who served longest were F.M. Hale, C.A. Watson, and R.E. Burrus. The post office closed in 1922, and the school consolidated with others in 1948. The churches are still active.
