Running Fence was a temporary land art installation by Christo and Jeanne-Claude completed in northern California on September 10, 1976. Stretching 24.5 miles across Sonoma and Marin counties to the Pacific south of Bodega Bay, it crossed roads and ranchland in a vast white nylon barrier that stood 18 feet high. The project took more than four years to realize and involved extensive public hearings, court sessions, and environmental review, reflecting the artists' view that its social, legal, and technical processes were part of the work itself. Installed for only 14 days and then removed without visible trace, it endures as a landmark example of site-specific environmental art.
