Kelly’s Halfway Inn stood at the midpoint of a journey along the route, with Bakersfield 64 miles to the north and Los Angeles 62 miles to the south. Weary travelers and truckers used its garage service and restaurant before completing the other half of the trip. Construction of the Ridge Route also began from the north and south ends and advanced toward this midpoint.
