The Methodist-sponsored Alvan Drew School stood here from 1913 to 1947. Started by missionary Mrs. M. O. Everett and named for a supporter of rural education, it began as a one-room school and later added a student-operated farm, blacksmith and print shops, and grist and planing mills. It closed after a 1947 fire. In 1950, the Dessie Scott Children’s Home, formerly in Breathitt County, moved here.
