The Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science is a major cultural center in downtown Sioux Falls, housed in the renovated former Washington High School, a Neoclassical building designed by Joseph Schwartz and faced largely with Sioux Quartzite. Opened in 1999, it preserved a notable historic structure that had been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The complex unites science, visual art, film, and live performance, including the Kirby Science Discovery Center, multiple art galleries, major traveling exhibitions, and venues for theater, concerts, dance, opera, and the South Dakota Symphony. Its continued use links the city’s cultural life with its architectural history.
