Buck Mountain, a summit in Albemarle County’s Free Union area, is notable less for its height than for the layered history around it. Early landmarks included Buck Mountain Road, completed in 1748, and Buck Mountain Episcopal Church, built in 1747 for Frederick Parish and later moved in 1860 to its present site; the church is considered a rare surviving simple wooden Anglican parish church from colonial Virginia. The area also preserves an old cemetery with uncertain origins and evidence of late-18th-century crossroads commerce centered on Michie Tavern, established in 1784. Together with Buck Mountain Creek, these features make the mountain a longstanding rural landmark.
