Old Fort Harrod State Park in Harrodsburg preserves the legacy of Fort Harrod, regarded as Kentucky’s first permanent American settlement. The original fort was built in June 1774 by James Harrod, Abraham Hite, Jacob and James Sandusky, and about thirty other men after Harrod’s 1773 arrival in the region. The reconstructed stockade interprets frontier military and domestic life with cabins, blockhouses, and other buildings reflecting the fort’s design and settlement pattern. The park also includes the Mansion Museum, the reconstructed Lincoln Marriage Temple, the George Rogers Clark Federal Monument, an early cemetery, and other landmarks. Established in 1934, it remains a major site of Kentucky history.
