Lake Wawasee, a natural glacial lake southeast of Syracuse in northern Indiana, is the largest natural lake wholly within the state. Spring fed and formed by glacial geology, it was once called Turkey Lake and was named for the Miami chief Wawasee. From the late nineteenth century onward it became a noted summer retreat for visitors from Indianapolis and Chicago, with landmarks such as Spink's Hotel and Eli Lilly's lakeside home. Its clear water, varied underwater contours, wetlands, and sheltered bays have supported recreation, boating, and sailing, while modern conservation efforts focus on protecting water quality, habitat, and the watershed.
