Hancock's first county court was held in March 1829 in the home of James Dupey, 300 yards south of this site. The two-story log structure was also the scene of the first circuit court in April. Samuel C. Jennings was appointed clerk, John Sterett was sheriff, the county seat was to be on Richard Hawes' land and named Hawesville, and the surveyor of Breckinridge County was designated to lay out Hancock's county lines.
