Construction of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge started in February 1967, and the bridge opened to traffic in August 1969. The California Bridge Authority included Governor Ronald Reagan, Lieutenant Governor Ed Reinecke, Secretary of Business and Finance Gordon C. Luce, Director of Finance Casper W. Weinberger, and member Floyd L Sparks. It was constructed by the State Department of Public Works under Director James A. Moe and the Division of Bay Toll Crossings under Chief Engineer E.R. Foley. City councils of the terminal cities included San Diego Mayor Frank Curran, Helen Cobb, Bob Martinet, Allen Hitch, Floyd Morrow, Henry Landt, Mike Schaefer, Sam Loftin, and Leon Williams, and Coronado Mayor Paul Vetter, Ben Cohen, James Darnell, Joseph Overton, and Richard Parker.
