Battle of Middle Fork Bridge
Military
On July 6, 1861, Union troops on a scouting mission under Capt. Orris Lawson of the 3rd Ohio Infantry encountered Confederate pickets at Middle Fork Bridge. After a heated exchange, Lawson’s men fell back. Federal soldiers returned in force later in the day and secured the bridge. Confederate attempts to recapture it failed, aiding the Union advance to Rich Mountain.
