Near Savannah on the Isle of Hope, Wormsloe preserves much of the former plantation founded by Noble Jones, an early leader in colonial Georgia. Beginning in 1736, Jones established the estate and built Fort Wymberley, a fortified house that became part of Georgia’s defenses against possible Spanish attack. As that danger receded, the property developed into a plantation worked by enslaved people, with more than 350 eventually held there and on related family lands. Passed through generations of the Jones family, Wormsloe later gained a new main house in 1828. Acquired mostly by Georgia in 1973 and opened in 1979, it is known for its oak-lined avenue, colonial fort ruins, and layered military, plantation, and family history.
