Heceta Head Light stands on the Oregon coast midway up a 205-foot headland, where its 56-foot tower has projected the strongest light on the Oregon Coast since the 1890s. The headland, named for Spanish explorer Bruno de Heceta, lies within the traditional Siuslaw lands of ɫtúwɪs, where Siuslaw people hunted sea lions, gathered seabird eggs, and told of the cliffs in tribal legend. Built after federal approval in 1888 and completed in 1893, the station included keepers’ housing and service buildings. Later staffing changes altered the site, but preservation and restoration efforts led to its listing on the National Register in 1978 and its reopening in 2013.
