On July 26, 1863, Gen. John H. Morgan, in command of Confederate troops, passed through this village and proceeded northward toward Salineville while being pursued by Gen. James M. Shackelford, commanding the 14th Illinois Cavalry, First Kentucky Cavalry, 9th Michigan Cavalry, 11th Michigan Battery, 86th Ohio Mounted Infantry, 2d Tennessee Mounted Infantry, and Steubenville Militia.
