In North Santee near Summerton, this archaeological site joins Indigenous and Revolutionary War history. The Santee Indian Mound, part of a Santee mound village complex, was likely built between 1200 and 1500 and probably served as a burial mound, a temple mound, or both. Centuries later, the British used its commanding height to build Fort Watson on top of it during the American Revolution. In 1780, patriot commanders Francis Marion and Light Horse Harry Lee attacked and recaptured the post, making it the first fortified British outpost in South Carolina retaken by patriot forces after the British occupation that year.
