SOO Line locomotive #2719, built by the American Locomotive Company for the Wisconsin Central division of the SOO Line Railroad in 1923, pulled passenger trains between Chicago, Minneapolis, and Duluth. On May 15, 1960, it was donated to the City of Eau Claire for display in Carson Park, where volunteers of the Chippewa Valley Railroad Association cared for it. In the early 1990s, the non-profit Locomotive & Tower Preservation Fund was established to raise money to restore the engine to operating condition, and it succeeded in running the locomotive on November 22, 1997. After several successful mainline excursions, those trips could no longer continue, and after the locomotive's home roundhouse in Altoona was torn down and the engine was left outside, the Lake Superior Railroad Museum took custody of it in 2007. Now in the museum's collection at Duluth's Historic Union Depot, #2719 is stored under cover, protected from the elements, kept in running order, and has operated on the museum's North Shore Scenic Railroad, a 32 mile tourist train along the shore of Lake Superior.
