Travelers on the California Trail passing through Carlin Canyon crossed the river four times while moving beneath perpendicular walls of vast rock that overhung the road, creating a feeling bordering on fear for those who passed under the precipices, as Lewis Beers wrote on Aug. 3, 1852.
