Indian Mound Cemetery is centered around the Romney Indian Mound and is also the site of the First Confederate Memorial, Parsons Bell Tower, and re-interments from Romney's Old Presbyterian Cemetery. Owned and maintained by the Indian Mound Cemetery Association, Inc., the cemetery contains over one thousand interments, including veterans from many wars reaching back to the Revolutionary War. Among its notable sites are the Indian Mound, one of the largest remaining mounds in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, and the Confederate memorial dedicated on September 26, 1867. Those buried or memorialized there include Stephen Ailes, United States Secretary of the Army; William Armstrong, United States House Representative from Virginia; Edna Brady Cornwell, First Lady of West Virginia; John Jacob Cornwell, fifteenth Governor of West Virginia; Marshall S. Cornwell, newspaper editor and publisher, poet, and author; Dr. William Henry Foote, Presbyterian clergyman and historian; David Gibson, merchant, veteran of the War of 1812, and donor of the cemetery land; John Jeremiah Jacob, the first ordained Methodist minister of Hampshire County; John Jeremiah Jacob, fourth Governor of West Virginia; Howard H. Johnson, instrumental in locating the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Romney; George Preston Marshall, owner and president of the Washington Redskins; and Gilbert Proctor Miller, orchardist and founder of Hampshire County's fruit industry.
