Caribou Mountain is the highest peak in Idaho’s Caribou Range, rising 9,803 feet in the remote backcountry of Caribou–Targhee National Forest about 40 miles southeast of Idaho Falls. Visible east of Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge, it rises moderately rather than sharply, gaining about 3,400 feet above Grays Lake across four miles. Runoff from its slopes feeds tributaries in the Snake River watershed, connecting the mountain to the region’s larger drainage system. Officially recognized by the United States Board on Geographic Names, the summit has an alpine subarctic climate marked by long, cold, snowy winters, mild to warm summers, and severe winter wind chill.
