509th Composite Group – First Atomic Bombardment
Military
20
In 1944-45, members of the 509th Composite Group of the United States Air Force trained at the Wendover, Utah, Army Air Force Base for the vital secret mission of delivering the first atomic bombs on Japanese targets in August 1945. Their work, together with the combined efforts of members of the United States Army and the United States Navy who provided massive armed service support, helped bring World War II to a much earlier conclusion. Recognition is also given to the scientific teams who created the weapon, to those who sacrificed their lives in the Pacific Theatre and other theatres of action during World War II, and to the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, whose loss is especially recognized as part of mankind’s struggle for a more peaceful world.
