Built from 1823 to 1831 and operated until 1901, the Pennsylvania Canal extended from Duncan's Island to Northumberland. Along its 41-mile course, the division included 13 locks, 7 aqueducts, old Shamokin Dam, and the West Branch Towpath Bridge. Traces of the canal can still be seen at points along this road.
