Canby’s old City Hall was built in 1892 after the contract was awarded to J.D. Carroll of Mankato, Minnesota, for $5,324. Carroll ran short of materials, and for a time court action was threatened, but the matter was settled, and in December the City Council paid him $5,597 in full for the building, stage flagpole, and extra work. Canby’s population in 1892 was 616. A new City Hall/Library, approximately one half of the present city building, was completed in March 1960 at a cost of $52,899, and the second half of City Hall was completed in October 1980 at a cost of $250,000. When the old City Hall was demolished, its bell was salvaged. The bell weighs 970 pounds and originally hung in the City Hall belfry three stories above the ground at the same corner where the old bell tower stood.
