Springhill Cemetery
History
11
Initially designated as the “Graveyard Donation,” Springhill Cemetery was established in 1836 with the founding of DeSoto County. It is the burial site of early county and city officials, African Americans, members of mutual and benevolent organizations, and local merchants. The cemetery also includes a large number of victims of the 1878 Yellow Fever epidemic. Largely abandoned by the 20th century, Springhill Cemetery is notable for its marble headstones and distinctive funerary art.
