Peters Mountain Wilderness is a protected section of Peters Mountain in Virginia within Jefferson National Forest, designated in 1984 as part of the Mountain Lake Wilderness Cluster. About 1.5 miles of the Appalachian Trail cross its rugged ridge, where sandstone outcrops, bogs, and broad views overlook West Virginia. Its forests include old-growth stands, and its streams and wetlands support notable species such as the candy darter, northern saw-whet owl, and many warblers. The mountain is especially important for the Peters Mountain mallow, a plant unique to this mountain whose decline led to endangered status before fire helped spur new seedlings. The wilderness is managed to preserve its natural condition.
