Ivan D. Goodwin was born and raised in Ennis, Texas, enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps from 1946 to 1949, graduated from North Texas State College in 1952, and then devoted decades of service to his community through the Ennis Independent School District. He served in many roles, including 22 years as band director, during which the Ennis High School Band entered the UIL Marching Contest in 1956, performed a military precision drill, earned a first-division rating, and began 18 consecutive years of receiving that honor under his leadership. Recognized for his professional excellence, he was inducted into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame in 1994. He also served as assistant superintendent for 12 years, sat on the Ennis I.S.D. Board of Education for nearly two decades including eight years as board president, and was appointed to the first Ennis Economic Development Commission. During his daily walks along Park Street, he envisioned a walking trail along the top of the Old City Dam, with lighting and benches so residents could walk peacefully and safely while appreciating the surrounding beauty, and that vision became the Ivan Goodwin Walking Trail.
