Snow Mountain, in Franklin County in western Maine near the Canada–United States border, rises among remote highlands including Bag Pond Mountain and Round Mountain. Its significance lies in how its slopes divide water among several drainage systems. Runoff from the north side flows through Indian Stream, Chain of Ponds, and the North Branch of the Dead River to Flagstaff Lake, the Dead River, the Kennebec, and the Gulf of Maine. The southeast side drains by Little Alder Stream and Alder Stream into the same branch, while another side sends water to Big Island Pond, the Kennebago, and the Androscoggin, reaching Merrymeeting Bay.
