The Southern Hotel and Stage Station began as a log cabin built in 1859. Over the next half century, many noted people connected with early California history were entertained there. It is associated with Simon Fisher Southern and his wife Sarah Lafferty Southern, pioneers of the Gold Trail from 1849 to 1855.
