Established in 1862 following the Battle of Apache Pass, the largest conflict in the Arizona Indian Wars, Old Fort Bowie overlooked the only spring for miles. In the pass, massed Apaches under Cochise and Mangas Coloradas were routed by howitzers fired by California Volunteers they had attacked.
