Batteaux, a name originating from the French word bateau meaning boat, averaged sixty feet long, eight feet wide, and two feet deep. When fully loaded with cargo, which could weigh up to six tons, batteaux had only a draft of about eighteen inches. This allowed them to navigate the shallow waters of the upper Roanoke River and the canal.
