Four Peaks is a prominent mountain massif in the Mazatzal Mountains, about 40 miles east-northeast of Phoenix, and a familiar feature on the city’s skyline, often snow-capped in winter. Also known by its Yavapai name, Wi:khoba, it takes its English name from four distinct summits aligned north to south: Brown’s Peak, Brother, Sister, and Amethyst, with Brown’s Peak the highest point in Maricopa County. The surrounding Four Peaks Wilderness, established in 1984, contains diverse wildlife and part of the Arizona Trail. The range is also known for amethyst mining, its image on Arizona license plates, and the destructive Lone Fire of 1996.
