The Cathedral Group was characterized by Fritiof Fryxell as expressing a gothic note more evident than in many great cathedrals built by men, seen in the profiles of countless firs and spruces gathered like worshippers on the lower slopes, in the converging lines of spire beyond spire higher up, and most fully in the peaks themselves, whose pointed summits tower above all else and direct vision and thought higher. Fryxell, Grand Teton National Park’s first park naturalist, was also a geologist, teacher, and mountaineer who developed public education programs, trail maps, and safety rules for climbers, and his publications became classics of explanation and eloquence.
