On September 20, 1863, at about 11 a.m., Laiboldt's Brigade of Sheridan's Division in McCook's Corps, commanded by Colonel Bernard Laiboldt and including the 44th Illinois, 73rd Illinois, 2nd Missouri, 15th Missouri, and 1st Missouri Light Artillery, Battery G, formed on the ridge west of this position in column of regiments. When Davis' line on the Brotherton place was attacked, the brigade was ordered to charge and pressed forward to the ground in front of that line, while part of the ridge it had first held was occupied by Lytle's Brigade of Sheridan's Division. Carlin's Brigade was forced back over Laiboldt's, and both over Lytle's, and all fell back nearly to Crawfish Springs road. The line then rallied, regained the ridge, and forced the enemy toward its foot. The Union line was again driven back over the high ground west of the Crawfish Springs road and off the field. Casualties on September 19 and 20 were 38 killed, 243 wounded, 108 missing, for a total of 389.
