Salem Maritime National Historical Park preserves part of Salem Harbor where the city’s growth as a seaport remains visible in wharves, warehouses, houses, and a museum ship. Established in 1938 as the nation’s first National Historic Site and redesignated a National Historical Park in 2025, it traces Salem’s maritime history from the colonial Triangle Trade and Revolutionary privateering to post-independence commerce with the Far East. Landmarks including Derby Wharf, the Derby House, the Custom House, and the replica Friendship of Salem connect the waterfront to global trade, war, migration, and the labor and wealth that shaped the city over centuries.
